Senegal’s Sadio Mané ruled out of World Cup 2022

Senegal’s Sadio Mané will not participate in the 2022 World Cup because he was unable to heal from an injury, according to team officials.

After 20 minutes, the former Liverpool attacker was ejected from Bayern Munich’s 6-1 victory over Werder Bremen on November 8.

Mané suffered a severe knock to his “tibial plateau,” according to Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann, and will have an X-ray to assess the extent of the injury.

The Senegalese Football Federation has decided to exclude Mané from the World Cup after a second scan was suggested in Qatar.

Team doctor Manuel Afonso told a press conference: “Unfortunately, today’s MRI says his recovery has not been as encouraging as we had hoped and we have decided to declare Sadio Mané’s withdrawal from the World Cup.”

Senegal’s all-time leading scorer, Mané, converted the game-winning penalty earlier this year when his nation defeated Egypt to win the Africa Cup of Nations.

On November 21, Senegal will face the Netherlands to open their World Cup campaign. They will also play hosts Qatar and Ecuador in Group A.
