Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from Manchester United has been announced with immediate effect, ending his turbulent return to the team where he first rose to fame.

Ronaldo, who ended the season as the club’s leading scorer in 2021–2022, has not started the season as the new coach Erik ten Hag’s first choice.

The 37-year-old’s position at Old Trafford became untenable after he launched into the club, top administrators, and his manager in an angry interview with Piers Morgan.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect,” the club wrote in a brief statement.

“The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford.”

Ronaldo’s Manchester United contract was set to expire in the summer of 2023.

However, Ronaldo and the Red Devils have both decided to terminate the contract at this time in order to enable a transfer away from Manchester.
