Heart-wrenching Reason Behind My Sudden Retirement – Obafemi Martins Tells It All

Obafemi Martins was one of Nigeria’s most lethal goalscorers, who had a huge reputation to his name since bursting onto the big stage as a youngster for Inter Milan.

In a recent interview on Brila FM’s morning show, he revealed that some of the challenges he had with injury issues compelled him to call it quit on what he feels was an impressive career.

He further stated that he was a bit lucky to have played a little longer because he thought he would end his career at Newcastle around 2007 and 2008, when he had a problem with his tibia.

Furthermore, Martins said he had to play forcefully with the same injured leg and was fortunate to have gotten a move to Germany, adding that even while he was in Germany, he couldn’t play well because the injuries slowed him down a lot.

He said he had another knee problem, a stress fracture and as a result of that he had to operate on his knee again, then after the surgery, he took the decision to slow down in order to aggravate the injury.

Obafemi reiterated that, even then, he still played away from the pitch, like kickabout for fun with the boys and that was the major reason why he decided to quit football professionally.
