George Owu, a former Black Stars goalkeeper who played for Ghana at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), is optimistic that the Black Stars of Ghana can win the next AFCON scheduled to be hosted in Ivory Coast early next year.

The four-time AfCON champions secured their tenth successive AFCON qualification with a resilient 2-1 victory over the Central African Republic on Thursday, September 7, 2023, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

The Black stars managed to secure the top spot in group E with 12 points, with Angola emerging as the first runner-up with 9 points.

As expected, the Central African Republic and Madagascar took the third and fourth place with 7 and 3 points, respectively.

Despite the Ghanaian team’s inability to qualify out of the group stage at the last AFCON, George Owu has stated that he is still optimistic that the Black Stars can end their 42-year trophy drought in Ivory Coast next January.

In a recent interview on Onua FM’s, George Owu emphasized that this Ghana team can win the next AFCON with the right support and motivation from Ghanaians.

The draw for the upcoming continental tournament will be held on Thursday, October 12, 2023 in Abidjan, the capital city of Ivory Coast.
