Award-winning Ghanaian highlife singer and songwriter, Kuami Eugene has revealed the mental challenges he encountered after being exposed to massive wealth at a very young age and how public criticism affected him.
In an exclusive interview with radio show host Kojo Manuel, he stated that he felt mistreated by critics who, according to him, should have considered his youth and the challenges that came with his newly acquired wealth.
This disclosure sheds light on the emotional toll that popularity and success can have on young musicians, most especially when they face massive public scrutiny and castigations.
The musician’s openness about his experiences highlightes the essence of mental health awareness and support within the Ghanaian entertainment industry, where young talents often get caught up in the moment of navigating both success and challenges.
“I made a lot of mistakes when I was young; blowing up as a young guy wasn’t easy. At the age of 19, they should have considered the fact that ‘Oh, he is a young boy” he said.
Furthermore, Kuami Eugene described the rapid transformation from having absolutely nothing to suddenly amassing substantial wealth, including being paid huge amounts of money for shows and cruising in a Range Rover. He stressed that, the public did not empathize with his situation taking into consideration his age at that time.
“To move from not having anything to taking this amount for a show, to driving a Range Rover. I’ve never had all these before, all within a very short period. That wasn’t fair on the side of the public. They didn’t reason that he is a young boy and he is getting all this money,” Kuami added.
Kuami Eugene’s rapid claim to fame started at the young age of 19 with the release of his debut song, “Angela,” in 2017.
After becoming a hitmaker at such a young age, the Lynx Entertainment signee continued to release a number of hit songs, some of which include “Ohemaa,” “Wish Me Well,” and “Open Gate”.
In October 2022, Kuami made it into the headlines after he came out to announce that he had signed with the American record label “Empire Records”.
The announcement led to speculation that he had left Lynx Entertainment, a label spearheaded by famous Ghanaian music producer Richie Mensah.
In response to the numerous speculations, Lynx Entertainment came out to clarify that the singer had not departed from the label adding that the new signing with Empire formed part of a “strategic partnership”
This new signing underscored an important development in Kuami’s music career as he explored new avenues for his music on an international level.
